    Family Tree Ghosts

Isaac Anderson Henry? or Isaac VanHoozer? The lover of Matilda or her son? Maybe no relation at all.
Isaac Anderson Henry? or Isaac VanHoozer? The lover of Matilda or her son? Maybe no relation at all.

People often comment how far I’ve gotten in genealogical research  in the few short years I’ve been doing it.  My dear departed friend Sandy, was into genealogy for decades and couldn’t build her family tree as much as I did mine in the first year.  The thing is – I was standing on the shoulders of generations of genealogists in the various families.  I was blessed with a family that seemed to have one history buff that was into researching the family or documenting it every generation.   I just had to pull it together.  Yet there are two things that lurk in the tree – walls and ghosts.

Walls are people you just can’t seem to get past.  You can’t find documentation as to who their parents were, where they came from, or how they just showed up to start that branch of the family.  One of my walls is Jordan Temple, my 3rd great grandfather.  I have much documentation on him after he married my 3rd great grandmother, Matilda Henry,  in Greene County Tennessee on the 11 Feb 1836.  Then his disappears into Loudon County, Tennessee after her death.  It’s as if Matilda made him a person – before and after her he didn’t exist.

Ghosts – no not the spooky ones – the people that you find hints about in your research but never quite get documentation to firm them up and put them in the tree.  There’s two related to Matilda – Isaac VanHoozer and Isaac Anderson Henry.  Let’s go back to those genealogists whose shoulders I stand.  One has put Isaac VanHoozer as Matilda’s first husband.  Others have noted him as the father of her son Isaac Anderson Henry.  All seem to agree that the birth took place in Greene County, Tennessee.  When I saw that I was thrilled. Not just that I grew up in Greene County go back there regularly to visit my folks thus have a chance to research this but Greene county is blessed with intact records that go back to its founding.  There have been no courthouse or record fires in its history!  To add to my good luck they have a genealogy library that has a great staff to assist you!  I should find something right?

Wrong.  I did find the VanHoozers and several Isaacs of the right age to father a child by Matilda.  There was no record of Matilda marrying anyone but Jordan.  So the marriage thing might just have been a polite way to establish Isaac Anderson’s parentage.  Next stop was the Bastard Index.  Back then if an unmarried woman had a child out of wedlock a man had to go to court with her to declare he’d be responsible for the child.  I’d guess either her father, William Henry, or the father of the child, Isaac VanHoozer, would have done this.  No, no record of that.  Next was the Indentured Children Record, these were the sad children, usually non-declared bastards meaning no man took responsibility for them in court. They became what we’d call ward of the court.  Back then they were hired out to work for room and board usually on farms.  Think – Cinderella type story.  Nope didn’t find him there.

I thought maybe he went with his father.  Why that would be and he’d not take his father’s name I wasn’t sure.  However. my bad luck trying to find this ghost continued.  That section of land left Greene County to become part of another county during that time.  That county has had record fires.  So another dead end into ashes.  **sigh**

I did get a hint in some other genealogists research that Isaac Anderson was indentured when his mother married Jordan.  That would make sense as he doesn’t appear on the census in his mother’s or his Henry grandparent’s households.  The other hint was he was a Confederate in the Civil War, if he was this would add to the rift as the Temples were staunch Unionist.  Following up on that I did find an Isaac A H VanHoozer that was a Confederate from East Tennessee.  Now if it’s him or another of the plethora of Isaac VanHoozers – I don’t know.  He had the right initials and was the right age.  I followed him in records hoping at some point he’d have to state his parents names.  Not found it yet but did find a picture related to the search of Isaac A. H. VanHoozer – him? probably the man whose records I’d been following. If he was Matilda’s son, I don’t know.  He wound up in Arkansas after the war.  It seems many East Tennessee Confederates went there not being welcome in their home area any more (remember East Tennessee was Union).

That is where I currently sit.  Looking at a cyanotype of a rugged man whose face speaks of a hard life and wondering if that life included being abandoned by his mother when she married a man that wouldn’t accept her non-declared bastard. Then, rejected by the community to which he never belonged due to his birth circumstances, he chose the opposite side in the war only to lose and be further ostracized.  Or is this just my writer’s imagination filling in the blanks? Am I taking scraps of information and weaving them together? As it is I don’t even have proof Matilda gave birth to an Isaac Anderson Henry beyond a few notes of hobby genealogists like myself pondering this mysterious link. Like all ghosts, it’s just a glimpse of something. One that might mean something or just be my imagination running away with me.

    Until next time.

Comic Comments – Mutant School Football League

    AA38 Cov

So the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning isn’t the only school for mutant kids.  There’s the Avenger Academy where kids are taught to be superheroes.  With just two mutant high schools you know they have to have like dances and sport competitions – Right?!?  That’s what this issue is about, post AvXinterruptus a flag football game between the two schools.  THEN Avenger Academy was cancelled and they all graduated I guess, I dunno don’t follow it.  Just picked up this issue to see the Jean Grey School part.

The ever present US legal disclaimer: All images are the property of their owners I reproduce them here under the Fair Use Doctrine of the copyright law for commentary and critique. No more than three pages total from any one issue is reproduced.

Okay here’s the team for the issue: Christos Gage, Writer – Tom Grummett, Penciler – Cory Hamscher & Rick Ketcham, Inkers – Chris Sotomayor, Colorist – Giuseppe Camucoli & Jim Charalampidis, Cover – VC’s Joe Caragna, Letterer – Jon Moisan, Assistant Editor – Bill Rosemann, Editor – Axel Alonso, Editor In Chief – Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer – Dan Buckley, Publisher – Alan Fine, Executive Producer.

This issue is a fun break and gives a glimpse of the staffs and students blowing off steam post AvX. At first the staff is permitted in the game but slowly they are disqualified, Iceman and Hawkeye are the first to go for excessive awesomeness. Then there’s fights, Logan tackles instead of grabs a flag – oops. Then again there is cold beer on the sidelines for the disqualified. Finally it’s figured out that Logan and Kitty were working to disqualify the adults so the kids could form two teams mixed from both schools and play. Logan denies being that smart but Giant Ant acknowledges that yes, Logan is that smart. The kids make new friends and see that they aren’t the only ones with mutant teen problems and a strange school staff.

That’s it… that’s all the fun to be had is in the light interaction between the two groups. Oh and now that I have the Doop Speak Translator I can at least get the gist of what he is saying.  Bull by the horns!  LOL that Doop!

The art in this is wonderful.  I love how it suits the story and comics in general.  There’s detail the people are pretty even if they are blobs or rocks or whatever.  The only issue I have is the cover thing I usually have – X-23 is NOT the ref she plays for her school.  Kitty Pryde is the ref and the only adult who has sense enough not to wear a superhero costume to a high school flag football game!  Also look at the cover – what the heck is wrong with X-23’s face why is it a series of black lines?  Okay I know I know covers are to pull you in but pull me in with something in the story further illustrated not made up crap.

Any way here’s a few scans of the issue to share the lighthearted fun.

Warning these maybe spoilery to some

If  you are still scrolling I assume you don’t mind that.

Really don’t blame me if you feel spoiled.

    I warned you…

    AA38 Disqualified for awesomeness

If Hawkeye and Iceman were allowed to play there’d be no game.  Awesome indeed.  Oh and Movie Hawkeye needs a quiver like that…

    AA38 girlfriend

TMI Santo, really TMI about the no junk stuff. But reminds me of the saying “I was depressed that I had no shoes until I met a man with no feet.” Let’s just leave it at that and move on shall we?

    AA38 we all know disfunctional

I think Wolvie can consider this mission accomplished – the schools are friends the kids are friends and the staff are friendly… Doesn’t matter if they are dysfunctional, they work.

    Until next time.

    Blazin’ Hot Mike!

So if Aaron’s done it Mike can’t be out done. That’s the rivalry between father and son.  Back some time ago, Aaron went to Buffalo Wild Wings and took the hot wings challenge.   He beat it and got his picture on the wall just after completing it – a smiling sweaty snotty saucy mess but victorious.  Since then, Mike has wanted to go to the same place (the one here in Kenosha) and beat it to at least tie Aaron.

Well Saturday, February 16, 2013 was the day!  We went to lunch there before grocery shopping.  He decided it was time.  The challenge is 12 wings in 6 minutes, one napkin, no drink, have to remove the meat with your mouth not your fingers.   Here’s the photo post of the challenge.

Book Comments – It’s Cold Days for Harry Dresden

    cdcover_med
The cover image is the property of its owners I reproduce it here under the Fair Use Doctrine of the copyright law for commentary and critique.

I discovered the Dresden files when he was on book 5 Death Masks.  I liked it so much my next vacation at the beach I read books 1-4  in a week.  I’ve kept up with them since then.  I generally devour them the week they are released.  I love the audiobooks too.  James Marsters does a great job reading them except Ghost Story which was read by John Glover.  Well Cold Days is book 17 and Ghost Story was book 16.

In the last book Harry was for all intensive purposes a ghost.  Which was interesting but being in that state it took away one of his traits that I like so much – the ability to kick ass in any kind of fight.  Yes when you are all wispy you can’t toss spells around or throw punches or use any weapons.  So the fun underdog wins the battle part of the typical entry in the series was gone.  **SIGH**   I did miss it but in this book Jim Butcher made up for it by a final battle that was chapters long.  I kid you not CHAPTERS long.

You see due to some technicalities Harry has his body back.  Now he also is the human knight to the winter queen who happens to be the faerie Queen Mab of legend.  She’s always been a terrifying presence on the edge of Harry’s life.  Since the books are written in first person the only view we get of her and others is through Harry’s perspective.  He’s always seen her as a malevolent character.  Even at the start of the story when she’s personally over seeing his physical rehab by trying to kill him each day – she’s not seen as a wonderful benefactress.  Yet as this story unfolds there are things we learn about her that make her more sympathetic.  She has a large weight of responsibility to the real world both mundane and magic that Harry (and thus we) weren’t aware.  Also in a private moment we learn the Queen like all fae folk was once human.  Fae are born as halflings and have to choose which side they will take, just how or when the choice is usually made we aren’t told.  We do see one halfling be forced into a side but it’s an extraordinary circumstance made by battle and insanity of courtly fae that sets up the situation.

I have to say I like glimpsing the magical beings but my heart lies with the magical humans like what Harry was when he was just a wizard.    This story spends a good amount of time in the Winter Court in Never Never which is the magical realm occupied by the fae.  Not my favorite setting in Dresden.  I don’t mind the White Court, vampires in Chicago as much as I do the Never Never.  I guess that’s because what brought me into Dresden was the concept of a wizard private investigator.  We’re far from that now but the roots of seeing the magic world in the mundane is what I loved.  I didn’t want to live all in magic in this urban fantasy – when we do it’s just fantasy and that’s way down my genre list from urban fantasy.  I’m a picky reader I know but hey there is so much out there I have to be.  Only so many reading hours per life ya know.

What I did enjoy in this book was the return of action.  Dresden isn’t just his bad self again – he’s his bad self augmented by the Winter Knight mantel and Queen Mab’s daily attempted murder training sessions.  So he can really kick ass as seen when the final battle rages for a quarter of the book.  Ya know I kinda think Jim Butcher missed writing the action too.   As much as I was glad to have it back, even I – the action glutton – thought this was a bit much.  Still it was fun but didn’t touch reanimating Sue the T-Rex to ride her through Chicago to get to the big supernatural battle though.  Nope that’s still my happy geek moment in the Dresden Files.

The other thing that was good to see back was Molly.  She’s not the terrified, tortured, homeless waif we saw in the last book.  Actually we learn why she was being trained so harshly by Harry’s godmother.  Molly is now a not just a good wizard in her own right but a a powerful one.  She works as a full team member without any issues on Harry’s part, except well the effects of the Winter Knight but I’ll let you discover that for yourself.  To see the team back together – Butters, Molly, Thomas, Karrin, and Bob  along with Toot-Toot!!!  (I adore Toot-toot!) working together to solve all the emergencies that are colliding at the same time. It’s wonderful to see them and awesome to see the characters have grown.

That is why I’m okay that it’s not a series about a PI who is a wizard in Chicago any more.  The characters out grew it.  Every character including Bob have grown and changed given the stories that have happened and the time passed.  That’s why I can keep coming back, it’s formula with growth.  That’s why I don’t miss the PI stuff but I do miss Chicago.  I want Harry back there not living off in fantasy land.  That’s all.

I love how threads and points from earlier books are paid off here in this story.  We learn more about Harry’s island Demonreach and what his role is with it.  We learn why Harry’s godmother was frozen in Mab’s garden in a past book.  We learn more about the Outsiders. More about the structure and nature of the fae’s courts.  So it’s a big world expander that ties up some things.

All in all it took me a day and half to read, yes it was a page turner.  I loved it and am left waiting at least a year to find out how the heck Harry gets out of being the Winter Knight without being a ghost for real the next time.  I suspect Santa Claus and Demonreach will have a hand in helping him with this one. Yes you read that right Santa Claus – he’s the Winter King don’t ya know.  Oh and he’s more if you read the subtle clues in the final scene where he chats with Harry after the huge battle.  Hint – brush up on the pre-Christian origins of our jolly one in red.

If you’ve not been introduced to Dresden Files let me have the honor of highly recommending them.  You can’t go wrong starting at the beginning in book or in audio book and working your way through.  It’ll be an adventurous action filled ride that leaves you longing for the next one.  I just warn you when you get here to book 17 Cold Days it’s gonna be a long wait for the next one -but it’s coming!

Living with the First Impeached President

Statue of Andrew Johnson across the street from his tailor shop.
Statue of Andrew Johnson across the street from his tailor shop.

I grew up in Greene County Tennessee. The main town is Greeneville and their claim to history is being the home of Andrew Johnson the 17th President of the United States and the only impeached President until Bill Clinton. Both were aquitted at their trial, to be impeached is to be brought to trial while sitting in the office of President. Andrew went to fight for the President’s right to appoint and dismiss his cabinet at will (that’s it in a nut shell okay? much more political stuff going on) – Bill went because he’s a womanizer. Really which would you want to be known for going to trial about? LOL!

My family’s path crosses with Andrew’s several times on several branches. The biggest one was when he was governor of Tennessee he helped my 4th great grandmother Sarah Busick Bright secure her widow pension due her from her husband’s service in the Revolutionary War. That’s what brought Sarah and James Bright to Tennessee from Maryland – his Revolutionary War Land Grant for service.

Also I’ve got Andrew’s signature on several files as Vice President granting leave to Union Soldiers from Tennessee to attend funerals of family members. Don’t raise an eyebrow at that. Yes Tennessee did secede but East Tennessee where my roots are and Andrew was from – was staunchly Union. I’ve got less than 10 documented Confederates to over 100 documented Union service members in my family tree. Andrew looked after the loyalist there from the time he was military governor through his Vice Presidency and his Presidency.

Andrew settled in Greeneville when he was about 18 and opened a very successful tailor shop. He married a local girl who taught him the basic 3 Rs Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic. She supported his political bid. One interesting note was they were married by Abraham Lincoln’s second cousin. Thus the Lincoln connection went back to when Andrew was young knowing Lincoln’s cousin and father. Eliza read to Andrew as he’d sew and gave him her love of reading. His famous oratory skills were credited to his reading and hearing her read the great orators over and over.

In Greeneville the original tailor shop still stands inside a National Park building built around it to preserve it. His house across the street was always closed when I lived there but has since been restored and opened to the public. In 1851 which would have been while he was a Representative to the US Congress he built a large home that is now a National Park and is open for touring. A duplicate of it was built just up the hill from the original and is visible from the Nathaniel Greene Museum but is currently a private residence. I am curious how the layout inside was modernized.

Also a replica of Andrew’s birthplace in North Carolina was built just across from his first Greeneville house and kitty-cornered from his tailor shop. BUT DON’T be confused he wasn’t born in Greeneville he moved there. However when he returned after his tumultuous presidency the 1851 house held bitter memories of his son that had committed suicide. So he bought a farm out of town to make a home.

He’s the only President who went back to Congress in an elected position. After several failed bids he narrowly won the seat and returned as the Senator from Tennessee in January 1875. He was returning to Washington when he stopped by his daughter’s house in Elizabethton Tennessee to see her and spend the night. It was there he suffered a stroke and died.

Needless to say growing up near all these places we made many field trips here to see the President’s house and tailor shop.  Other things like the museum at Tusculum College, the Nathanael Greene Museum,  the Early Home of Johnson, the replica birthplace, and the statue all came long after I was gone.

So enjoy this photo post of the current Greeneville sights of Andrew Johnson. Oh and yes it is GreenEville being named for Nathaniel GreenE.

Comic Comments – When the Dead Revive

    Revival 1 Cover

Revival 02 CovIt seems the small consistent presses are the ones turning out awesome stuff. The big publishers can’t get their acts together to bring everything to the table at once in a single title. That’s my take. I adored Think Tank and I’m digging Revival.  Both are comics that are slam dunks of the medium – strong multi layered stories whose telling is supported by great art.  Revival is about the dead coming back to life in the middle of Wisconsin, Wausau county to be exact.  Why they came back, how they came back, and what it means for the rest of the world is what the book is about.  It successfully goes from the personal focus to the international focus and back all building and adding to the story of the quarantined area after Revival Day.   You know it’s good when you can’t wait for the next issue to see just where this is all going.

    Rev 03 Cov

Okay let’s get the routine stuff out of the way – legal disclaimer – All images are the property of their owners I reproduce them here under the Fair Use Doctrine of the copyright law for commentary and critique. No more than three pages total from any one issue is reproduced.

Next a nod to the team that is bringing a great story to press. Story by Tim Seeley, Letters by Crank!, Covers by Jenny Frison, Art by Mike Norton, Colors by Mark Englert, Design by Sean Dove, Edited by 4 Star Studios.

    Rev 04 cover

Now let’s talk story set up, May Tao a local reporter breaks the news to the world that the recently dead in central Wisconsin are coming back to life.  Her story goes international complete with a reviver jumping out of a cremation oven.  The area is put on quarantine by the CDC.  Why?  Think if this is contagious – no one dies but birth rates continue what would that do to the balance of the world resources?  That’s why.  So a perimeter is set up where no one is allowed in, no one is allowed out.  A task force is formed to study the Revivers with CDC representative and a local officer who is the main character if there is one Dana Cypress.  I’d say she’s more the linchpin character that ties all the others of the ensemble together.  Oh by the way her younger sister is a reviver – murdered and came back, doesn’t care to solve her own murder though.

    Rev 5 Cov

This book doesn’t follow the formula of comics of an arc, an issue, an arc and so on.  Instead it’s telling a story that keeps growing and developing involving an ensemble cast.  This is a hard thing to pull off in book series, TV series, and comics – to develop each character fully while keeping the stories moving and in balance.  There are arcs for individual characters, May Tao just completed one with the odd fundamental cutting edge exorcist.  Yet the one with Justin and Jamie and their reviver father has just started.  Some are short arcs like May’s some are long and slow building like Em sister of Dana.  That’s what makes this an awesome read!  It’s well written and just because one story beat wraps up in this issue others are at their mid beats or just starting.  That’ll keep me reading for a long time.

    Rev06 Cov

Now for the art which is awesome. Honestly I forget I’m reading in someways and feel I’m watching a movie play out. A good novel does that to me just like a good comic. The story is so well done the medium of how it is told fades away and I’m left enjoying the experience. I don’t think I can pay any higher praise to a comic book artist than that – you made the story real for me to watch unfold.

If this isn’t on your pull list it should be. It’s not to late to go back and get reprints of the first few issues. It’s well worth catching up and if you do it as one night’s read I’ll bet my last potato chip you’ll have a great time!

**** SPOILER ALERT********Some interior pages*********Maybe Preview/Review for some but Spoilerly to others *********

    Revival 02-04

In some cases the death and revival are harder for the living to deal with than the dead.  In other cases, like the one they are coming from it was hard for the dead to be cheated out of the eternity of bliss with those they loved that had died before them.  Interesting to see various reactions from those involved.

    Rev 03-03

I like how the Hmong population of Wisconsin is worked into the story.  As it goes on we see the vast difference in the generation that migrated here after Vietnam and those who were raised here come to the surface.  That also plays into the story of how they interact with the events and the mysterious white ghost/demon creature.

    Rev04 working together

Here’s Dana and Ibrahaim from the CDC. What’s awkward is they had a romantic encounter the night before at a local bar before they knew they’d be working together. Honestly I like them and hope both sides of the partnership flourish.

    Rev 5-1

Here’s a good example of story layering. May is coming near the dramatic conclusion of her arc with the fundamentalist stalker. Em is just learning a bit of what this white lurking thing we’ve caught glimpses of in other issues is and what it wants. So the fast developing story of May is driving to a conclusion, the slow building story of white creature is developing, and Em’s personal story moves a bit further along it’s arc while encountering the crescendo of May’s story and the building arc of white creature. Cudos!

    Rev06 p1

Here’s a look at what the world saw to introduce it to Revival Day.

    Until next time!

King Neptune of Virginia Beach is their trademark. He stands looking from the sea to the tourists.

Mike is enrolled in this class on-line at the Joint Forces College in Norfolk, Virginia. As part of the course they meet in person for training two different weeks. One was just a few weeks ago in January. When Mike asked me if I was interested in going to Norfolk/Va Beach in January. You KNOW I answered yes with visions of snow piles at the end of the driveway feet tall and having endured winter in Wisconsin since before Thanksgiving dancing in my mind. I accepted my new job with the provision I had that week off to go to the beach.

Well, it didn’t turn out as I envisioned. First off this has been a great winter with less that 30 inches total for the whole season. Heck we even had some warm days in the low 50s in January. Those days happened to be the same time I was in Norfolk during a cold snap where they were – you guessed it in the 50s. No snow on the ground when I left nor when I returned. The real cold rolled in the next week when Norfolk returned to their pleasant highs in the 60s on good days touching 70. Outside my window as I write this sets 11 inches of snow. 8 of which fell while I was at work Thursday night. Even when I plan a get away from Old Man Winter I don’t get away.

However I did turn the trip into a writer’s retreat. In the mornings I made my breakfast and wrote in office there with our our. In the afternoon I enjoyed checking out beading stores and strolling on the beach. I ate good seafood fresh like you can NEVER get in Chicago. I slept in and was productive. So despite meeting my dreams of warming my bones after a Wisconsin below zero winter not being met – I’ll take this mild winter and a relaxingly productive week away any month!

First off I’ll show you our rooms. We stayed on base where Mike could walk to the Joint Forces College. Luckily that left me with the rental car to explore after my morning writer’s retreat.

Where we stayed during the week
This is where we stayed. We didn’t go for the one story cottages – not for us we got a room in the duplex housing that had been converted into three rooms with a common kitchen.
    Office
The little office area with our room where I’d write in the mornings with coffee handy!
    Bedroom/living room
Main room area with the microwave/fridge where I could make my eggbeaters each morning for breakfast. Bed was VERY comfy, very!
Sunset from our room looking oceanward
Beautiful sunset views looking oceanward from our room
    Deserted streets of Virginia Beach
It was eerie driving down at the tourist area of Virginia Beach it was deserted made me think that zombies were coming!
    Deserted Va Beach
I had the beach to myself most of the time. It was a nice day just needed a wind breaker. I was loving the sun!
    Deserted beach play area
No kiddies were there to play on the play area things. I swang and watched the surf.

What company I did have on occasion were all bundled up like they were expecting an arctic blast. I longed for a time when 50 seems cold enough for a tuke, gloves, and a winter coat. Some day again, some day again!

As I said in the header picture King Neptune here watches the tourists a Virginia Beach. He’s something to see. So full of details great and small around all angles. If you ever go there allow time to circle and appreciate the artistic work he is!
King Neptune Statue on Va Beach
I love how his face looks grandfatherly but strong. I’d not want him as a foe!

One of the tiny octopi around him, there other small sea creatures too! Each rendered with the detail of the giant statue.

His concrete base has crashing waves etched into it! So lovely.

Don’t miss the schools of various species of fish supporting him. They are rendered perfectly!
Va Beach on a cold day
It was so good to see flowers and greenery growing outside. Loved it. Sat and stared at it just taking it all in…. ahhh
Hotel Bar kept the fires burning
The hotels on the strip were doing their part to make themselves inviting. Stopped and had a cup of coffee here. I was toasty warm with the heaters (the silver dome things) and the fire pits going. The waitress asked me “Where’s your coat?” I said I was from Wisconsin – “Oh well no wonder you sat outside.”
    Fancy Bathroom - Va Beach
Since I had the beach, the restaurant, and all to myself. Here’s a shot of the fancy bathroom at the restaurant I think the heat was set at 75 in there… warm, very warm.
Va Beach on a cold day
Oh well even the walk way over to the parking garage was warm and green.

    Until next time!

Comic Comments – Gambit Tries Solo Title Again

    Gambit 5-1 Cover

I’m not sure what volume of Gambit stand alone title this is but it’s the latest one. I think it’s volume 5 according to Marvel. It’s nice to see him in his own title again. So it’s good to see Remy in the spot light. If you like magic that’s here in heaping quantities too.
What is sad is that he always seems to be treated like the ‘red headed step child’ as my grandmother put it. I think the call goes out for mediocrity when there’s a Gambit launch. No, don’t bring your A game a strong C or B- at the highest will do.

The story is that Remy hasn’t had enough excitement in his life as a Professor. Apparently the whole Phoenix AvX thing bored him as much as it did me. We he gets an invitation to a fundraiser at Borya Cich’s house he’s in to rob it for some good old time excitement. Borya Cich is one that bankrolls the uber bad guys. When the baddies are defeated Cich gets the gadgets or magical goodies they were using. Remy’s cover is to be there to get money for the Jean Grey school, his entertainment will be to break in and see what goodies Mr. Cich has accumulated. In the process of this he finds out he’s rusty and meets a mystery woman. They team up (stop me if you’ve heard this before) but she betrays him only to help him in the end. Oh and magic gets way out of hand and Cich loses his goodies and blames Remy (not the mystery woman for some convenient reason).

Now don’t get me wrong there’s nothing wrong with a familiar story frame. There school of thought is that there are only so many story frames out there (7 to 21 seem to be the consensus) when you boil things down to their essence. So the trick is being original in how you decorate that frame. I’m sure you can name many stories where two sides team up to get a goal that sticks it to a third party. That’s the frame here but the story seem a bit too trite, too often told in the thief/spy genre. Remy deserves better. He’s a strong diverse character with a lot of emotional depth but often is short changed into the joking flirty characterization of himself. That’s what happened here. The dialogue is weak stung out over many frames. The cliches keep coming and I ache to see more.

Then there’s the whole aliens and magic crap I don’t like. I know it’s a personal thing for me so I’ll do my best to overlook it. I try hard to just shrug and go that’s for someone else. But when it is used to justify weak writing I call foul. Write yourself into a corner then edit and rewrite the story don’t rely on magic, infinity cubes, Lazarus pits, or it was just a dream to get you out of it. That’s a cop out of a writer’s lack of ability. Here I felt so many opportunities to be a better writer and tell a more complex story were tossed aside thinking “oh this is a Gambit title it won’t last long any way.” Sadly it is such thoughts that I think feed that trend.

As for the art. It relies heavily on the colorist for textures and depths. The colorist goes for the glow Photoshop tones a bit much for my tastes. After having just left Think Thank where the details are drawn in this style struck me as wholly unfinished and rushed. Even more so as the title when on, with greater sweeps to the colorist filling in the lack of penciller’s detail. The covers struck me as a nod to the Bond openings where the women are frames for the images but again the concept seemed solid (much like the start of the written story) but then seemed rushed and unfinished.

In the end it all goes back to the mediocrity I mentioned in my introduction. I felt like the writer, penciller, and colorist wanted to bring their A game but couldn’t for what ever reason be it rushed or told don’t worry just get something out it’s not going to last or be promoted. I don’t know but I saw so much potential there that was left undeveloped. If you are a Gambit fan like me, this is still a must. It’s good to see him out there on his own and I support that in hopes that some day the team can bring their A game to it. If you aren’t into him and aren’t looking to pad your pull list to get something (freebies like shipping). Then as much as it pains me and saddens my Remy lovin’ heart I’d say pass this by and hope next volume gets better treatment.

    Gambit 5-01 - chatter

Okay here the inane party chatter grated on me like a cheese grater on my bare bum.   The Paris Hilton stupid shallow rich people wanting to hang out with gods, magicians, mutants, and aliens just hit all the notes of what I don’t like in my X-Men.  Yeah I know others do and that’s for them, enjoy knowing it made me cringe.

    Gambit 5-01-02

Oh Remy we oldsters always wonder just when did computers take over every thing?!?  Loved this scene it’s our Gambit doing what he does best and he’s pretty while doing it!

    Gambit 5-02 we are even

Okay here we meet the mystery woman he teams up with. She’s dumped him once and now before their team-up continues Remy evens the score. Good thing mutants don’t injure as easily as we real people eh?

    Gambit 5-03-02

As you can see she’s a tattooed Laura Croft type. I personally nominate this pose for the Hawkeye Initiative. Caw Caw boyz!

    Gam 04-04p04

As you can see it really jumped my no magic/gods/aliens in my X-Men shark by a mile. So there you go and I hope the next arc get down to more thievery heist type stuff and less magic stuff.

Giving Tubsy a beauty day with me.

**Waves** So worked the late shift last night during a winter storm. Not many customers mostly caught up on stock. It snowed 8 inches while I was there. Roads weren’t bad when I got off. The rush hour was over and the street crews had cleaned up the storm and were salting well to earn the missed overtime in the light winter.

That said today I’ve just felt BLAH. Today was declared a not leaving the house ME day. So I’m enjoying it and will see you guys on Monday!

  • An Apple Tree In Winter

    An Apple Tree In Winter

We have an apple tree in our backyard. It is very old and gnarly.  Yet it still has the loveliest blooms in the Spring.  It bears small hard apples  that are wormy.  So bad the squirrels throw them at us in disgust come Fall.  Mike has always wanted the treat to bear eatable apples.  So in spurts and starts he’d fuss with it, trimming, spraying where he could reach and such. Well, this January after a long talk with an orchard owner he set out to trim up this way over grown tree.  We had a warm day in the 50s on a weekend.  So there we were doing ropes to haul down limbs without damaging the neighbor’s garage or our fence.  Mike was being all manly wielding a chain saw while on a ladder or perched in the tree.  Either we killed it or made it better – we’ll know by this Fall which it is but here’s the pictures.

So this is about what it looked like when we started. WAY taller than neighbor's garage
So this is about what it looked like when we started. WAY taller than neighbor’s garage
So Mike would get to the limb that he determined needed taking off. He'd tie a rope to it drop it down to me. I'd get the rope & hand up the chain saw. My job was to guide the loose limb down safely.

Yes I safely guided this one down without damaging the neighbor's garage roof.

So here's Mike in the tree with the saw. I was planning my route to the ER every time he revved that saw's engine.

The yard debris drop off doesn't open until March so we piled the trimmed wood in our garden. A neighbor took some apple wood for his smoker.
