Mike was looking forward to this movie. To be honest I knew little about it but it looked action filled and hey I’m always up for a Friday night movie and dinner date. I enjoyed this more than I thought. I love the 80’s it was my college and new into the world as an adult years. I was always intrigued by West Berlin back then (and now for that matter). I also love spy stuff. This was a trifecta for me West Berlin spies in the 1980s. WHOOT! It is set in the days leading up to the Wall falling. Now then I was in our first house, Mike was out to sea, and I watched it all happen on the news in the now iconic images. But this tells the stories of the spies who didn’t really notice because they were busy killing to avoid being killed.

This movie is about Operation Dynamo which was the evacuation of Allied (before the USA were involved) troops from Dunkirk France after a horrific defeat. The movie focuses on the English evacuation where hundreds of their civilians sailed the less than 25 miles to the shore to get their men. They lost 68,000 men on that beach.  Let that sink in… 68,000.  This movie takes you to that beach and experience the desperation to get off the sea in front of you the enemy solidly at your back and you are getting mowed down from the air with no shelter to take from the enemy’s planes.  This movie lets you know what that looks like.

First thing to remember is this is a black satire not a documentary. Next is that it is a black satire based on the term of Gen. Stanley McChrystal in Afghanistan. Yeah the one that oddly shot his mouth off to a Rolling Stone reporter then lost his job. (more…)

Remember the Avenger movie that was a Captain America movie named Civil War? Yeah, it was good but in that the new Sony Spiderman made an appearance in the Disney Avengers. That was exciting but more so was he was spot on as the wisecracking teenager Spidy. So after seeing Peter Parker in detention watching a video featuring Captain America whom he just fought… Mike was sold. I was willing to try again. There had been enough time after the terrible Spiderman 3 starring Toby McGuire.  That movie actually burned me so bad I skipped all the Spiderman movies since. BUT I have to say this one was spot on.

It’s not a secret to long time followers that I’m a big fan of Wolverine. Just look back at my comic comments tag and you’ll find a lot of Wolverine. While the movies have been fun up to now I’ve not felt he has gotten the movie he deserved for being one the strongest franchise characters for Marvel. That ended this March. Sadly the last movie with Hugh Jackman as Logan did them both justice.   (more…)

I have an unique taste in TV. I’ll admit it. Generally my favorite series get cancelled after the first season (Firefly, Flashforward, Dresden Files). I also primarly watch true crime shows. (Most of my set recordings are ID Network). However since moving here I discovered the Viceland network. It’s quirkly off beat and edgy. One series that I record from there is Balls Deep. It is a series starring Thomas Morton where he immerses himself in a subculture to better understand the members.  He’s a very unassuming man with a quiet deameanor but he’s game to experience various cultures.

This Tuesday is another movie. Again an older one but I just saw it a few weeks ago. The premise is that through some medication/chemical a woman is able to unlock her brain and use 100% of it. I hoped for more than what I actually got. It was entertaining but honestly I wouldn’t tell a friend to go out of their way to see it. However if it’s on and you are looking for something to watch, it’s not say Nothing But Trouble which I wouldn’t inflict on anyone. (more…)

This is a film from 2015 but I just watched it a few weeks ago. It’s about an FBI who winds up on a Mexican drug cartel task force. Her morals are tested much as the subjects in the real life documentary Cartelland‘s were.  Questions of when do the ends justify the means? Is it more important to get justice or revenge?  What compromises in your personal moral code are acceptable to do your job?  What principles do you hold higher than your life?  Can you trust someone whose answers differ from yours to these questions? When do two wrongs make a right? Do they ever?
