    Another Visit To Mike’s Garden

    It’s that time of year in Wisconsin where the tomatoes and peppers flow!  Here it’s not like in the South where tomatoes come in from May to September.  They all roll in in a big juicy red & yellow flood.  Though we didn’t plant any yellow ones this year.  Peppers of all types are tumbling into the kitchen in plastic grocery bags full!

    Mike is freezing them daily.  I’m eating them so much I’ve got a mouth ulcer from the acid.  I LOVE them but I do wish we’d gotten some yellow ones since they have less acid.  We’ve made salsa, we’ve made gazpacho.  Mike’s hung peppers and chilies out to dry by the yards.  Still they roll in faster than two people can eat them.

    We always have chili on Sundays in the Winter.  We feel good as we cuddle with bowl to watch NFL while the snow flies outside.  It’s extra good to know the goodness came from Mike’s garden that summer before.  He’s the chili master of the house from start to bowl.  I just have to persuade him one habanero per pot is enough sprinkle on dried  habanero if he wants it hotter.  I love spicy I don’t like painful! So our daily work with the garden harvest pays off all year long!

    We have an apple tree in our yard. It bears every year but the apples have never been good. The squirrels love them except one year. That year the squirrels threw the apples at us. I’m not making that up of exaggerating. They’d sit on the awning over the back door and drop the tiny rock hard apples on us as we left. I think it was their way of protesting the bad harvest.

    This year the apples look good from a distance. Then when you get up close where they are apples and not just red peaking through the leaves they are spotty and deformed, not good at all. However the squirrels are enjoying them but dropping the rotting parts all over the yard, garden, garage, driveway, walk, and vehicles. I’m thinking of taking up throwing the rotten parts at the squirrel in protest. Turnabout is fair play right?

    Flowers didn’t get much attention this year in the drought.  We don’t water grass and flowers.  We do water food bearing plants.  Some flowers get the over spray being just over the fence or path from the vegetable garden.  The morning glories benefited from that.

    Fairest Issue 1

    This is the first arc of the Fable spin-off Fairest.  It takes issues 1-6 to tell the story of Sleeping Beauty (Brier Rose) and the Snow Queen (Lumi) waking from their slumber imposed by Brier’s curse but used by the Fables to destroy the Adversary.  Okay, I know if you don’t read the Fables title this a lot of jargon to take in.  Hold on I’ll do some ‘splainin’ after we get the legal disclaimer and artistic credits out of the way.

    Fairest Issue 2

    Fairest Issue 3

    For those who don’t follow Fables let me first explain the concept. Think of any fairy tale, folk lore, or fable you’ve ever heard that is now in the public domain and those are the denizens of Fables. There are many different worlds in Fables Oz, Arabian Tales, King Arthur’s Court, and so-on. These are call the homelands. We are a world in this universe know as Mundy because magic isn’t as predominate here. The book started when many characters were fleeing the homelands because of a villain called The Advisory. These refugees settle into life in New York City in a neighborhood called Fabletown. Except for the animals because talking animals would draw attention land was bought in upstate New York for them and they settled there on The Farm. The war raged on with The Advisory for many issues but finally his empire in the homelands was defeated with a multi-pronged attack that included Brier Rose (Sleeping Beauty) sneaking into his capital and pricking her finger at just the right moment to put all in charge of the empire into a sound sleep due to her curse. There have been many arcs since then and the capital slept away as Fabletown/Farm won the war and started the return of those who wanted to go back to the homelands. Recently goblins took Brier and Lumi (Snow Queen was formerly of Advisory inner court) not sure which one was the Sleeping Beauty since both were beautiful. Upon leaving they torched the capital killing all the other sleepers in the city. THAT’s where the Fairest series begins.

    Fairest Issue 4

    I do encourage you to read all of Fables it’s a fantastic story way beyond the normal comic. It’s well written, entertaining, adult centered, story using characters from our childhood. However if you aren’t up to reading all those TPBs (even from your local library) then you can catch up with the Wikipedia article on the title or peruse the list of characters at Wikipedia.

    Now we are all on the same page as it were, let’s get on with Wide Awake where the ladies awaken. The story starts with Ali Baba finding a bottle in the ashes of The Advisory’s capital. In the bottle is a Bottle Imp whose power isn’t to grant wishes but instead to know things, specialty being the Mundy world. Still he knows where the greatest treasure of the capital city that has not been looted is kept. He leads Ali to the goblin encampment and the women. After some adventure and misadventure Ali wakes the beauties by kissing Brier with true love in his heart. Only the twist is the true love isn’t for Brier. The Lumi wakes in a really bad mood. She freezes all the goblins immediately and but feeling generous tells Ali, the Bottle Imp, and Brier to RUN! They take her at her word. Eventually they are caught and held as guests/prisoners of Lumi. There we learn Lumi LOVES stories. Bottle Imp tells how Brier became cursed something she didn’t know herself, how Lumi came to serve The Adversary, and a bit about how Ali became the Prince of Thieves. Later the knowledge gained from these stories helps Lumi and Brier win a large battle and come to a chilly friendship. Bottle Imp is granted his freedom for his help. We find out who was the true love in Ali’s heart when he kissed Brier. Brier not only gets revenge on the Dark Fae that cursed her but also learns that what she wants isn’t true love but true builders love – a foundation to build a future with someone else.

    Fairest Issue 5

    The story is like all in the Fables franchise extremely well written. Honestly the character development that continually builds on itself.  This series is impressive and multi-faceted. It has a good sense of humor in it with the Bottle Imp bringing most of it. I love how things that were small at first become more important as the story moves along. If you read any in this universe you have to be on your toes watching for where those small plot pivots are! Excellent for engaging a reader beyond surface entertainment. There is a lot of thought and writerly talent brought to bear in the story. Excellently done.

    Fairest Issue 6

    Fables is know for extremely artistic covers that represent characters in the story. Fairest is following in that tradition but I don’t think it’s as strong. The cover of issue 5 falls very short of that mark. The Photoshopped glowy fire in the background is pathetic. If it had centered on just Lumi and her polar bear that would have been great but now we had to grey them up and add some Photoshop horror. Issue 1 is by far my favorite cover. It is a wraparound cover with all the fair ladies that will make up Fairest pictured tending the waking Brier who kicks off the series. Great concept! Excellent execution!

    The interior art lives up to the VERY HIGH standards of the Fables franchise. It’s beautiful but story supporting. The people are consistent and well done. The sheer details put into the panels are breathtaking. It’s wonderful to just thumb through and enjoy the images. However I do miss the Fables trademark theme page boarders but that’s never been a feature of their spin-off books. I’m a big fan of the theme boarders. I think it comes from loving the old line illustrated books. Except these are in color! I’ll point them out when reviewing Cubs In Toyland arc when it is complete in that title.

    Over all this didn’t disappoint it brought great story with fantastic art the very things I expect from the Fables franchise. It’s a sound and strong beginning for this title. It did not fall short on any measure and honestly I expected nothing less.

    Next up for Comic Comments is a Zenescope title. We’ll visit Grimm Fairy Tales, Myths & Legends issues 16 & 17 for The Gathering story arc.

    Local Landmarks Vary

    Every community has its landmarks. Some stick around for a long time, even beyond the thing that caused them to be landmarks. I grew up in Greene County, Tennessee with such landmarks in my neck of the woods as the twin barns (now gone), dead man’s curve (no longer has much traffic due to by-pass), red gate (never seen a red gate any where near there), the broom factory (it’s not been there for almost 100 years), tin top, and a few others. All of which I know exactly where they are but if you haven’t lived there a while and learned the jargon you’d be as confused as hell by the directions from Mosheim “go out 11E toward Greeneville stay on it through dead man’s curve keep follerin’ it past the broom factory and make yer right between the twin barns.”

    Every time I’ve moved into a new community I’ve had to learn the local landmarks and jargon. The South seems to have more and more colorful ones than any other area I’ve lived. They are the basis for directions from the locals. Something that was much more important back in the days before everyone had a GPS. I’ve been in new towns following sketched directions on a paper towel looking for the two clowns so I could turn left all before the days of GPS.

    Kenosha has a few but with the system of streets and avenues being numbered you don’t need them so much. Streets here run East West or as I remember it they go Splash into the lake S for street ya see. The higher the number the further North from the Illinois boarder you are. Avenues on the other hand go North South Along the lake, A for Avenue ya see. The higher the number the further west away from the lake you are. Got it? Simple if an address is 7563 19th Avenue (don’t know who that is just made it up) That place is between 75th and 76th Street on 19th Avenue. Given this system Kenosha doesn’t do much landmark directions but there are a few things that people reference.

    I’ve shared some with you already – Kemper Center, Simmons Island, Southport Beach House. Today I’m going to share three more with you.

    The first is the Hob Knob. It was established in 1954 in the supper club style of the 50s. It’s kitchy by today’s standards but fun. Sitting right on the shore of Lake Michigan the views are unsurpassed. I’ve only eaten there once years ago. I don’t remember much about the food but I do remember the decoration made me expect to see Frank Sanatra lead in the Brat Pack telling them this was hip little dinner club just North of Chicago he was talking about.

    I snapped this picture as we drove by in the Mustang.  Yes the top was down and I was enjoying myself.  I always like the big Cosmo painted on the side of the building.  It just lets you know what you are in for when you go inside.  Dining there again but this time calling to be sure we get seats that face the lake is on our Kenosha bucket list.  Last time we had seats that faced the street but we walked in and took what’s available.  I really need to go by there at night when the neon is all lit up and snap some more shots.

    Next up is a place on my Kenosha Bucketlist.  It’s been on the Food Channel as a great road trip stop.  Yes I’m speaking of none other than Kenosha’s cheese royalty the Mars Cheese Castle!  It’s been recently rebuilt to look more castle like.  However they kept their iconic sign.  Being next to the interstate where they get most of their business I’m told, it’s good to keep the logo.

    I’ve lamented that I have been delinquent in going into the Cheese Castle.  I mean I’ve been in and to the Brat Stop many times.  (subject of another post but let me say it’s not a place you stop for misbehaving kids but a bratwurst place). I’ve taken the exit from I-94 where it sits to head home as I did on the evening I snapped this photo.  But I’ve never gone into the place.  The locals tell me not to worry, it’s a tourist trap being the first big cheese place just north of Chicago.  It’s more known in the community for the iconic sign.  Well that I’ve seen so maybe that’s good enough.

    It seems that landmarks in Kenosha are food related.  There are more I’ll cover in the future there’s the afore mentioned Brat Stop, Sunnyside Wine Shop and Bar, Frank’s Diner, Capt Mike’s (gourmet mac’n’cheese), D’Angleos and several more.  Let me know what are your local landmarks and how are they used?  What were the landmarks of your childhood?  I’m thinking now when I go back to visit I’ll have to get photos of tin top, broom factory, and others too.

    Deadpool Issue 55

    We join Deadpool in issues 55 -57.  The arc is Reborn and Deadpool is.  He’s gotten his wish for Death in a way – he can now die which makes life sweeter.  However being Deadpool he’s not thought about what the other consequence would be.  Some are great others not so great, he sets out to fix one of the not so great ones.

    One of the good things that resulted from Deadpool losing his regeneration ability. He’s got his rugged good looks back! He’s pleased with that. He’s just not comfortable without his face covered after having it covered for years. Understandable and tragic in any one else but in this case it’s funny, being DP and all.

    Deadpool Issue 56

    One of the downsides is he can now be killed. Even worse he’s lost his edge in fighting because he could always rely on regeneration to fix any damage. Now it’s not true and a simple low class supervillain wanna be can kick his ass. His answer is to go get more training to hone his skills. That leads to an attempted heist of Pym Particles from SHIELD. Except things don’t go as planned, Deadpool is set up but the tables turn and he winds up saving the one who set him up and the wanna be supervillain that attacked him. I love it when Deadpool’s plans come together.

    The other downside is that word has gotten out to DPs various enemies that he can now be killed. So once our insane hero had again honed his fighting edge to go save Bob in the three days Wolverine gave him. Except now he has people gunning for him that just might take up his time.

    The story is fun and DP is as crazy as ever. He’s good in that he couldn’t let someone who double crossed him die nor could he let a guy that brings a glue gun to a real gun fight get killed. That’s the endearing part of DP. The amusing part is his prattle. That’s classic here from his trying to remember how to shave to wondering why the Trickster wants to work with him. Great DP story – not too heavy but amusing all the way through. This is a great read for the laughs. DP bumbles through like the Mr. Magoo of superheroes. Not only does he save the two but he also foils the robbery. Well worth reading, I’m surprised at the end he didn’t say “I love it when a plan comes together.” LOL!

    Deadpool Issue 57

    The art is strong for me. It’s got a slight cartoonish edge but that works well for DP given his take on the world. The covers are pretty. Issue 56 has a 1960s feel to me kinda invoking Fury Max covers but with a comical DP twist. I like that. Issue 55 cover has women in the back ground and while I don’t disagree with the concept women would find the newly restored DP handsome it’s not really addressed in the book. His restored looks are addressed but women’s response isn’t. Again a pet peeve of mine, I’d been happier with just him making love hearts to his own reflection. Still it’s a pretty cover.

    That concludes our visit with Deadpool for now. We’ll leave him with Dresden Files and Fables to finish their arcs before I write a Comic Comment on them. Up next will be the first arc of Vertigo‘s Fairest entitled Wide Awake.

    Glad that’s all loaded.

    This Saturday Aaron made a second run up to the house he’s rented with two of his buddies. He’s getting ready to start his sophomore year at Madison. I personally think this is it, he’s moving out. He won’t be home this Summer because he’ll miss Winter semester to go to boot camp. So this was the move of the large furniture. Mike helped pack the truck. Mike couldn’t go to Madison to help unpack because he had stuff to do that day. I’d not be that much help. Aaron was depending on his roommate to help. Only it didn’t work out that way. Roommate was called into work and Aaron unloaded by himself. Still here’s the photos of my son moving on in life. Later this week, he’ll take off in his car to settle into his new home. I’ll probably have photos of that too.

    Deadpool 50

    Ahh back to routine. We are now to another Marvel title – Deadpool. This 5 book arc is entitled Dead and takes issues 50 – 54. I like him because of his constant stream of conscious prattle. I enjoy it when it’s more pop culture centered. Still this story fits him to a T and I enjoyed it. The art was great and life is good in the Deadpool universe. Except he wants to die.

    Deadpool Issue 51

    The covers for this arc are awesome.  I do enjoy them and like how the hold true to the spirit of the content and reflect Deadpool’s style.  The interior art is done by two artist and is very similar in style.  I can’t say I prefer one over the other.  There are things with each that I love and stuff I don’t care for but nothing I despise.  The style leans a bit toward cartoonish at times but that suits Deadpool given his almost Road Runner like behavior at times.  I think both the covers and interiors are solid comic book art that I enjoyed very much.

    Deadpool Issue 52

    The story is one that builds on Evil Deadpool from the previous arc. For those of you who don’t know Deadpool has a regeneration ability so that makes him unkillable kinda like Logan in that fact.  Except a mad scientist kept parts Deadpool had lost frozen and those were thawed out to grow together to make an EVIL Deadpool.  Which in theory would also be unkillable.  Except in the battle against Evil DP, someone shot him with a serum dart that killed him.  Now the real Deadpool thought that was great!  He can finally die!   He wants the serum.  Thus starts this arc where he’s trying to die.

    Other mutants who have the regeneration/healing abilities aren’t so keen on the serum and want to control it. Deadpool being his crazy self drags his buddy Hydra Bob into the mess he creates trying to find the serum.  DP goes to Fisk, the leader of a world-wide crime syndicate, and tells him about it.  Fisk says he’s not interested then goes looking for himself.  Which is also the response of Daken.  Except Daken wants it to mess with his father Logan.  Finally DP goes to the Uncanny X-Force who agree to work with him to find the threat.

    Deadpool Issue 53

    What follows is a series of ever more complicated follies of trying to find the serum.  Think A-Team when the plan comes together, well DP’s plan of dying is coming together. In the end, the serum isn’t exactly what they thought it was and DP decides he REALLY doesn’t want to die any way.  He comes to that conclusion once Bob points out once DP is dead there won’t be anyone to protect Bob, DP’s BFF.  Only problem is it’s a bit too late when DP changes his mind because everyone is out to kill him for stirring up more than needs to be stirred up.

    Deadpool is classic Deadpool. His internal dialogue is sharp and witty.  Everyone’s reaction to him adds a bit of humor to the classic superhero/supervillain match-up.  I find it funny that we get what’s going on in his head because we have the stream of consciousness narration boxes in both his internal voices.  Psylocke on the other hand is at a loss to make sense of his mind.  In the end it is Logan who gets the guy, he knows what it’s like to stick around to save a friend, even when you are tired of sticking around.

    Deadpool Issue 54

    I think this starts a new era for Deadpool.  For once I’m hoping not too much changes.  Sure there are some changes, some that are major but essentially I want him to remain the wacky not quite right reluctant hero.  The one that annoys the heck out of everyone even Capt. America.  We’ll see what’s up next for the Merc with a mouth, Wade Wilson aka Deadpool.

    Up next is another Deadpool arc. This one takes issues 55-57 and is called Reborn. After that we’ll be leaving Deadpool to finish his current arc. That’ll take us out of Marvel for a while. We’ll pass over Dynamite’s Dresden Files and Vertigo’s Fables for the same reason – let them finish their arcs. We’ll settled into Fairest‘s first arc taking issues 1-6, it’s entitled Wide Awake. I think you’ll enjoy that one!

    Welcome back to the new and improved marylouiseeklund.com. I’ve put my WordPress class lessons to use around here. First off I’ve updated the layout as you can see. Ohh click on my photo there on the right and you’ll go to my home page! (or you can be boring and use the home link in the menu)

    Also you can hover your mouse over the new menu that has fly outs and drop downs for three whole tiers! There are great new pages established such as Contact me there in the About Me menu.

    I’ve added a Links page with a few of my favorite links and my comments about them. I’m working on a Blogroll page. That one is much longer and takes a more work but it’s progress watch for it to appear there on the left.

    The Archives are now on the right when you open a post. See it there —-> the calendar looking thing? That’s it.

    Each post now has a feature photo that’s mine, or used by Creative Common license, or a scan of a comic used under the Fair Use allowance of Copyright material for commentary and critiques of said work. (I never use more than 3 pages total from a comic.)

    I’m sure there will be more tweaks as the weeks go by and I learn more. Yet I think it’ll build on this framework I’ve established this weekend. So keep your eyes open. Shout out what you think of the changes and I’ll return to my regular posting tomorrow. That’s all go enjoy investigating what I’ve done with the place.

    Don’t Mind My Dust

    Not what it really looks like behind the scenes but what it does in my imagination.

    Today I am home alone. Unusual for a Saturday but I don’t mind. After Lesson 4 in my class I’ve got ideas buzzing about in my head for spiffing up the place around here. Today I’m trying out things. Don’t worry if you come here and things are changing drastically from one page to the next. I’m tinkering with stuff behind the scenes and then look at it up front. IF you see something you really like give a shout out – “HEY! I really liked – That slide show of posts” the same for the reverse “The slide show made me dizzy don’t like that.”

    Any way things will settle down after today until next lesson. I think then the tweaks will be smaller that today’s total revamping.

    Oh check out the menu bar up top there – yes it has drop down choices from the primary choices then fly outs from the secondary to tertiary choices. I worked on that yesterday and felt very proud of myself I might add. VERY PROUD. **nods satisfactorily**

    So pardon the mess but know improvements are coming!

    Wanted: A Muse that works 9-5, Monday – Friday, no weekends or holidays required

    Night fall, my Muse will be here soon to wake me up.

    In the last few weeks I’ve gotten up at 3am to write.  Why because suddenly my muse was talking to me.  I saw a chapter, a post, a short-story – complete in total being read to me as if I’d downloaded it off Audible. I could see it all in front of me.  My reader’s ear could hear it being spoken.  Heck if it was a post I even saw what scans/photos I wanted in it and the format.

    It’s not that I didn’t try to do this during the day.  My life is now such that I can work during the day from 9-5 at home on my computer writing.  I have a wonderfully supportive husband.  My son is now old enough to take care of himself.  I don’t have a job outside the home.  I am free to write that novel, develop that website, and do those things.  I am ever grateful to be blessed with such opportunity.  It suits my health and I’m following my dreams.

    This was a freebie I got with my monthly shipment. It contains teasers from Batman Earth One, and Batman Vol.2  story arc entitled Court of Owls which was told in issues 1-6.

    As I said I’ve not been into DC for years.  I tried Wonder Woman about 4 years ago but didn’t like it.  Before that it’d been oh… since 1976 that I’d bought a regular DC title (excluding their other imprints like Vertigo).  Still of their lead characters Batman is my favorite.  His being my first word and all.  So when this became available for free I thought – sure why not.  I mean it’s FREE.  Since it is the stuff after the jump isn’t spoilery since there’s not a full story to spoil in a teaser.

    Okay here’s the credits – I’ve got.  The full credits for Batman Earth One weren’t listed but Geoff Johns was the writer and Gary Frank was the artist.
