This Friday I’d like to introduce you to something that isn’t a mystery but is by its very nature mysterious – Number Stations. Have you ever pondered what the world of international spying is like? Do you enjoy glimpses into that world when hearing spies of the past tell their Cold War tales? Would you like to witness a current spying even in operation RIGHT NOW without any danger or consequences? Wouldn’t that be freaky? Well you can with number stations! Just get yourself a radio that picks up short-wave frequencies and you have a front row seat to current spy operations around the world.
Last Friday it was a case of not knowing where a man is. This case is not knowing who a man is. It takes place in Australia in 1948. It is known by several names – Somerton Man, Tamam Shud or Taman Shud case. The only thing we know is a man was found dead on Somerton Beach that no one has been able to identify.
This story first caught my eye because it happened in Asheville, North Carolina. That’s just over the mountain from where I grew up. That’s home of Biltmore House and Gardens, one of my favorite places. That’s an area I feel I know. Feeling that connection I tucked in to listen to the tale. Then through the years I’d occasionally look to see if any new info ever turned up on that missing guy.
First off the missing guy has a name, it’s Zebb Quinn. He was 18 years old when he disappeared. The story started out somewhat straight forward. Yet as the years went on there were twists that only real life could provide, because if a writer did them you’d say that’s over the top. Let’s take this strange story layer by layer. (more…)
If you have followed my on and off blog you know I’ve struggled to fill Fridays. Finally I think I’ve hit on a topic that is going to stick. Freaky Stories. I am a lover of strange stories. True stories with no answer or stretch incredulity or just make you go ‘Hmmm’.
