HI!  Remember me?  I’m that girl that used to blog five days a week.  What happened?

I’ll tell you what happened–life happened.  Yeah I had to get used to working a part-time J-O-B again.  Then add in a jewelry business on the side.  Then for fun, I wrote a novel in my copious spare time.

The novel’s working title is House of Lucan. It’s a science fiction fantasy.  I finally learned after years of writing that if I talk about a plot I won’t write it.  So I shut-up and put-up or rather put the plot down on paper.  I have to thank dear Eva Jarkiewicz for being my cheerleader through the process.  Her almost daily support was why I got through the first draft!

Last week I went to Madison.  I attended the Writer’s Institute at the Madison Concourse Hotel.  It was an excellent conference.  There I officially pitched to two agents and wound up beside another at lunch.  All three are interested in the book and me.  So I am continuing work with them to see if one is a match for me.

While there I realized how far I’ve come as a writer.  I have published works from large publishers.  I have connections in the industry.  I’ve learned a lot of techniques that have improved my writing.  I have cards with my picture!  Yet when it comes to writing I feel I’ve not made any progress.  I don’t know what I would think would be progress.  I mean if I by some grace of the fates I wound up on the USA Today’s best seller list that inner voice in me would say, “Yeah but it’s not the New York Times.”  If I got that I know the inner voice would say something like, “Yeah but that’s just in the US”  and so on.  I’m beginning to think that little voice in my head is the type my father warned me about.  He said there are those who “if they had the Taj Mahal as an outhouse it still wouldn’t be good enough.”

Part of the writer’s block I battled for so long came from this little voice saying ‘no matter what it’ll never be good enough, you’ll never be good enough.’  The badgering (my apologizes to Wisconsin) got to me and I froze.  Then along came Eva and her virtual pom-poms.  She liked it.  She really really liked it.  I could do more to please a friend.  As I did more and more  I looked back and taa-daa  I had a first draft of a novel.  Sure it needed work but for the first time I had a first draft that I loved.  One that maybe it wasn’t good enough but it would do, do for Eva and me if no one else.

Then I worked on it just a little bit and took the jump to Madison to workshop it and pitch it.  I had two one on one critique sessions with experienced people in the industry.  I was shocked when I left each session.  I had pages, WHOLE PAGES!, with not a mark on them.  When I asked they said “It’s great as it is.”   I was stunned and remembered the bloody page I got back from my very first one on one critique from a pro.  I HAD come a long way.

As I moved about in the conference having meals and had down time with others attending I realized how very few had published as I had.  That had actually worked with real publishers and editors.  How few knew people that worked in the industry and talked with them about the market, trends, and such.  How few of them knew the industry guidelines on genre, chapter structures, word count, dialogue, and such.

It wasn’t then I had time to reflect on how far I’d come.  Instead I had anxiety over the pitches.  Then when I had them like it I walked out feeling like Sally Fields accepting her Oscar.  “I can’t deny the fact that right now you like me.  YOU LIKE ME!”   The funny thing was that night after all the pitches were done, the one on one critiques, the critique group, THAT was when I woke multiple times with anxiety attacks.  After it was all over, that was when I experienced the worst of it.

Now with a week’s perspective I can look back.  I think what was happening that last night was that ‘never gonna be good enough’ voice experiencing some pretty crippling blows.  It was his/her anxiety of not controlling me as much any more that woke me.  No, I’m not there yet.  Where ever ‘there’ is now because it’s always a moving target.  But I have achieved some theres and passed them.  It’s just now I’m on my way to the next there and this time is different because I’m enjoying the journey.  I’ve learned to say ‘so what, it makes me happy’ occasionally to that badger above my office door.  I know that no matter what my stuff  is good enough for me, my friend, and once upon a time in Madison for three strangers that are literary agents.   Mark that down as another there achieved and on to the next one.

Drive up banking in the winter – when you make the passenger get out and knock the ice off the card slide

Let me first start by stating the obvious – IT IS COLD OUTSIDE!  Yes it was -16F when I woke up.  No that IS the actual TEMPERATURE you don’t wanna know the wind chill – somewhere in the -30sF.  I don’t plan to go out until afternoon when we are supposed to warm up to about oF. Okay formalities taken care of I’ll start on my post now.

Due to work I didn’t go down to see the folks (mine and his) until after Christmas.  It worked out just fine.  Aaron and Sara came down later and stayed after us as they wanted to celebrate New Year’s with their friends here.  Ahh I remember when we actually stayed up in dressy clothes and partied with others.  Now just staying up is the challenge.  Funny as I get older I get more like a baby routine keeps me from being grumpy.

Any way here are a few photos from the trip.  Not much as I only had my phone.

    New Year in TN
We visited my parents for a few days. Here’s Mike and my folks outside a Mexican restaurant in their town. Yes we had to show our support for the Tennessee Volunteers – all graduates of the University of Tennessee ya know. Dad is a golden grad and got his 50 years since graduation pin.

Okay tomorrow and Thursday I work so hopefully I’ll get another post in the pipeline for those days – maybe about the great YWriter and a postcard from the past… or maybe swamp tour or Colonial Williamsburg… or maybe not…   Until next time!

**Blows the dust away and gets out broom**

Why hello there!  It’s been awhile since I’ve been here.  Lots has happened and not so much has happened.  I do have a good excuse as to why I’ve been gone.

First off Miss Mo my female kitty got worse.  It was very sad.  She died and we did discover that the issue was a fast developing spinal cancer.  I still miss her very much.  She was a very special girl.

Miss Mo at the Vet's. She made a number of visits before the spine cancer took her.
Miss Mo at the Vet’s. She made a number of visits before the spine cancer took her.

Next Mike graduated another post-grad program in Norfolk.  It was another trip there for a few days.  I was very proud of him.  While there we went to Colonial Williamsburg.  I made lots of great picture.  Yes I’ll do a very belated post about them.

Then there’s work.  A few times we’ve had short staff for medical reasons, people moving, etc.  At times I’ve work full time rather than part time to help out.  I love what I do so I don’t mind.  BUT for me it’s a side thing.

Finally my writer’s block broke.  Yes I furiously wrote 41 chapters of a whole new story, 21 chapters on my Urban-fantasy with a rural setting, and about 12 on my steampunk novel.  The muses were so demanding I’ve been cramming in writing where ever I could.  Now my goal is to go to an event in Madison by their continuing education branch where I can do pitches to publishers and agents.  Oh to get an agent!  My focus will be on the whole new story and getting it prepped as that muse is the most demanding.

He's a cadet now. He'll be commissioned as an officer upon his graduation. This photo is from his graduation from basic earlier this year.

Aaron is doing well in college and in ROTC.   He got a full scholarship in bio-chem from them.  He loves having his own small apartment.  No roommate problems that way.  Being one who has to report to PT at 5:45 am with roommates who think 10:45 am classes are early can be difficult.

The holidays were nice.  Our big present this year was a new furnace and boiler.  Our 30+ year old one finally gave up the ghost.  Heat is a must in Wisconsin and a new system isn’t free.  So each time the radiators bang with a surge of new heat we wished each other a very Merry Christmas.

Did craft fairs again this fall and winter.  They went very well.  Now maybe I’ll make time to get an on-line shop up in 2014 along with a book agent and a few novels sold!  Eh?  why not dream big!

Mike and I took a vacation to Florida in the fall.  Again we enjoyed an airboat tour.  Also we managed to not go to a single amusement park.  Did hit the beach though!

    Wonderful airboat tour to ourselves!
    Wonderful airboat tour to ourselves!

Health wise 2013 was one of improvement.  My 2012 surgery seems to have helped many issues.  It’s a slow and gradual process getting healed and stabilized but well worth it.  Sadly as you get older bouncing back from such things goes slower than I’d like.

Finally for Mike – he’s nearing the end of his Navy career and retire looms on the horizon.  I don’t know what we’ll do with ourselves.  We’ve spent all our relationship with our lives accommodating the Needs of the Navy first and foremost.  Now, there will be no monthly drills, no 2 weeks or more of active duty, no call ups – just waiting until we need to collect retirement.  However that might be pushed off another year or two if he can.  Captain Mike loves his Navy.

Our remaining pets the two Furry Boys – Red and Blue are facing problems of aging cats.  Red has chronic kidney insufficiency.  Blue had hyper thyroid.  They both take medication regularly.  They are healthy and happy  but aging like the rest of us.

As for comics…  Yes I’m still into them.  Saw Thor The Dark World and enjoyed it.  However I do agree Tom Hiddleston’s Loki got the best lines.  Then again I’ve always enjoyed snark  (sarcastic humor).  As for reading – I am behind.  As in a few short boxes behind not counting those I only get in digital form.  So be patient with me, I’ve been writing more than reading.  However if there’s an issue you really want to chat about – shout out to me and I’ll be sure to move that title to the top of the catch-up list.

I guess that gets everything caught up about me and mine.  Hope you and yours are doing well, had a great holiday season and are looking forward to 2014.

I apologize from missing a day in posts. I had work and am battling a slight sore throat that just won’t go away. So work and straight to bed consumed my day. Hopefully Sunday I’ll feel better and get back on track. Speaking of that Mo is better but hobbling as I’m sure her little hip is very sore.

Back in June Mike had two weeks active duty in Naples, Italy. Here’s a few of his photos from around Naples.

  • Let’s Talk Travelling

    Let’s Talk Travelling

I spent last week in Norfolk Virginia.   Mike was graduating from a class he took and I went to join in the festivities.  Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the graduation.  I had to get back on Friday to get ready for a big craft sale on Sunday.  My travel agent Mike who used his mileage for my ticket booked me too close.  The good news is it worked out as Mike won awards for his papers and had a special luncheon to go to so I’d been on my own any way – might as well catch a plane.

Over all my flying experience was acceptable and typical of the era.  Seats too small tightly packed planes, delays, missed connections due to delays, expensive food ($5 for two boiled eggs!), security searches, kids screaming for an hour on the flight – you know the usual joys of flying.   Still let’s concentrate on the positive shall we?

During my layover in Philly there was this strolling band – They came by a few times while I waited and made me smile each time. (my first youtube up-load!  This old dog is learning new tricks!) Not bad for my first phone video.

Then I got to Norfolk and went down to the rental car. The man saw that I was adding my spouse and we were military. (psst he looked like Mr. Sulu from Star Trek OH MY! ) He dug through and found a set of keys that was separable by the two large split rings they were on. Which was good when it came time for me to go to the airport and Mike to go to the ceremony. Also he briefed me on how to start a Prius. I’ve never driven a hybrid or a car with keyless start. First off press the break to the floor and while pressing start gently press the gas with the other foot.  Also the park isn’t in the gear shift but a button. Finally the gear shift isn’t really a gear shift it’s a switch when you choose a gear it beeps shows on the heads up display what gear you are in and the stick pops back to what we old fogies consider neutral. Still I enjoyed watching the energy display on how I was charging and using the battery/engine.

I got a lot of writing done.  I also rested up from the fever.  Things are getting better but yep that flu lasts the full two weeks as promised.  Still did a few fun things.  Went to Colonial Williamsburg from which there will be several photo posts from that.  Also one afternoon we went to the beach and just floated in the waves.  Again more photo posts from that.

Then the big news was Mike won an award for his papers.  I have to say as his editor I am very proud of him!  He’s the writer though and all the credit goes to him.  I have to say I think the time was a recharging time for me.  I enjoyed comic books, getting back into blogging, and quite honestly rest in quiet.  I didn’t turn on the TV or radio but enjoyed silence and alone time.  Being an introvert (yes I am soundly an introvert by Myers-Briggs unlike some other traits where I’m 50-50 splity.  It only means I need alone time to recharge, being with people doesn’t charge me it expends me even if I enjoy it) it was a great recharge time.

Then my travels home.  Due to flight delays I missed my connection.  Cudos to US Airways for handling so smoothly.  Once I got in the terminal they had a new flight booked for me (the next one just a few hours later) and exchanged my boarding pass for my missed flight for my new one.   So in a few hours while I relaxed in a very comfy chair at Charlotte airport and read comics (on my phone but more about that later).   In the end I got home just fine and in a timely manner.

A great trip that was much needed to get away and rest up.  Loved it!

    It’s The Old Days Again

You know that Mike hast to go some where on nice weekends. This time it was a reenactment over at Silver Lake in Kenosha County. Of course we got in the faithful old Mustang, put the top down and took off. When we got there we discovered a nice park not far from our house. A quaint reenactment set just before the Revolutionary War broke out. Here’s the photos from the day.

  • Just A Few Laps Around The Lake

Just A Few Laps Around The Lake

Back on May 26th Mike and I were looking for something to do. You know he HAS to get out and DO something if it isn’t snowy on the weekend. So after seeing in the paper that there were boat races on Lake Andrea in Pleasant Prairie we were off to see what it was about.

It was about small boats that sound like lawn mowers doing laps on a very small lake not far from our house. Really there were heats, different levels, and such. Interesting but as the sun started to set the day was getting cool we headed home. Here’s a few shots of the day.

    Boat Races Spring 2013
We weren’t the only ones out for the day. Here come three boats on the turn…
    Boat Races Spring 2013
As you can see they didn’t leave their opponents in the dust but rather in the mist!

There where the green flag is in the photo was the starting line. They used flags like in car racing. If a boat broke down there would be a caution flag. Winner got the checkered flag.

  • Hicks Family Reunion 2013

    Hicks Family Reunion 2013

It was the last Sunday in July again, time for Mom put on her program for the annual Hicks Family Reunion.  I went down to assist.  This year she was doing her grandmother’s line.  That’s our claim to the Hicks family.

It all started with David C. Hicks and Sarah Dennis Hicks. They married in Cocke County, Tennessee in 1830.  David met Sarah when he crossed the mountain from Virginia on his way to buy a farm and set up housekeeping in Middle Tennessee.  He must have been a non-inheriting son to be moving like that.  He was born 10 Apr 1804 in Albemarle County, Virginia and died 09 Oct 1850 in Cocke County, Tennessee. All I know is that his father was David James (or possibly James David) Hicks born in 1774 in Virginia.  David C.’s mother was Jemima Tennal (spelling according to their marriage record also spelled Tinnell in family Bibles).  They married in 1770 in Albemarle County, Virginia.  It is very probably that David James’s father fought in the Revolutionary War given his age and location, but on what side we don’t know.

Sarah Dennis was born about 1812 in June in Cocke County, Tennessee and died 8 Mar 1898 in Cocke, Tennessee.  Her parents came to Tennessee to live on her maternal grandfather’s land grant for service in the Revolutionary War.  He was Hugh Creighton (B 1730 Ireland, D.1804 New Jersey where his son Patrick lived) and served in the Revolutionary War.  He already had a farm in South Carolina so he gave (or they purchased) his land grant in Tennessee to his daughter Anne and her husband John Dennis.   The name Creighton with various spellings was carried forth in the Hicks family in his honor to this day.  Anne and John had at least three children one of which was the first Joel Dennis.  He  married Margaret Henry (which makes this line from my maternal grandfather related to the line of my maternal grandmother truly kissing cousins) and they were the parents of the Sarah Dennis that founded the Tennessee Hicks line from which I am descended ( the post about Joel Dennis from the Civil War was his son, Sarah’s brother)

Sarah and David C. had 8 children.  Their youngest was David Crockett Hicks ( his father’s middle initial is C. but we don’t know what it stood for, he was however a constituent of the famous David Crockett of Alamo fame) who is my great great grandfather.  Crockett was a character about whom tales are still told.  He had a temper and was lazy.  He was born 27 Jul 1852 Cocke, TN and died 16 Aug 1943 Sevier, TN.  He married a Margaret Jane Denton (from whom I have another Revolutionary War ancestor) in about 1873.  The courthouse burned in Cocke County so the exact date has been lost.  She however was born 18 Jun 1854 Cocke, Tennessee and died 04 Jan 1949 Sevier, Tennessee.  Here’s a photo of them and their living adult children.

Their son Joel David Hicks died before this photo was taken.

The reunion consists of the descendants from those in the picture. In their later years Crockett and Margaret moved about living with their children as Crockett never owned land or made a homestead. Each living child (Dibrelle was killed soon after this photo but that’s a story for another post) took turns keeping crochety old Crockett and quiet Margaret. My great grandmother was Ollie Belle (b 16 Jan 1888 Cocke,TN d 25 Oct 1975 Blount,TN) and if you were being disagreeable she’d call you Crockett.

She married Milas Lavator Rolen (b 22 Jun 1880 Sevier, TN d 28 Dec 1936 Sevier, TN) on 12 May 1907 in Sevier, TN. Here they are on their wedding day.

My grandfather was John Hollis Rolen (b. 23 Nov 1909 Sevierville, TN d. 08 Feb 1975 Sevierville, TN). He did many things in his life and some day I’ll share his security clearance form for WWII in a post that outlines many things he did some we didn’t know. However most of my mother’s life and all of mine he was an engineer for the 3M Company. Yes the post-it and Scotch Tape people. He married Johnnie Mae Temple (b 23 May 1913 Sevier, TN d. 11 Feb 2007 Sevier, TN). Here’s a photo of them just shortly after they married. They married 08 Apr 1939 in Alcoa, Blount, Tennessee.

They had two children. My mom Sylvia came first then John Hollis Jr. Unfortunately Junior died of a heart defect shortly after being born. Mom made it and is still going strong. She married my dad Sidney Bright. Here they are on their wedding day.

Bright, Sidney and Rolen Sylvia cut their wedding cake

Well they had me! That’s how I wound up being at the Dandridge Tennessee Senior Center on the last Sunday in June this year for the Hicks Reunion. Mom traced down all the descendants from Ollie Belle.  She worked on it for the full year!  It took three volumes.  She not only got a data on everyone but also did a small personal biography of each person and a photo page.  Really hard work and excellent results.  Here’s my copy of all three volumes.

Turn out was good. Ollie Belle Hicks Rolen, Sarah Hicks Rolen Baxter, and Bessie Parlee Hicks Williams decendants were represented.   Here’s this year’s group shot.

  • I Love A Museum

    I Love A Museum

    Uncle Same Wants YOU

Really I do. You see things you’d never see otherwise. You learn stuff while just looking at neat things. It doesn’t even have to be a modern interactive type of museum. To give you a perspective on how much I love museums – Once I had a day to burn in Boston. I wasn’t far from the Boston Museum of Fine Art.   So my plan was to spend the day there, grab lunch there then walk back to the hotel.   Well I’d finished the Ancient Egyptians, then took in the Impressionists (my top two things I wanted to see before lunch) when they were announcing that they were closing.  Yes CLOSING.  It was almost 10pm.  Time had flown and I was just getting started!   I took a cab back not sure about walking the blocks in the dark and had room service for dinner getting my order in just before they closed at 11pm!  THAT’S how much I love museums.  Let me add that my husband is the same way.

Thus when we found ourselves with most of a day to burn at Aaron’s graduation from basic at Fort Leonard Wood (remember the nickname is Fort Lost In The Woods because it is so far from anything) and learned there were museums on base… guess where we went.  Yep we went museum-ing again closing the place down.  There are three under one roof – Military Police Museum, Chemical Corp Museum, and Army Corp of Engineers Museum.  Across the street is a collection of buildings preserved from the World War II era of the base.  Much like my tale of the Boston Museum we closed down the three under one roof and didn’t get to see the WWII one.

You know I took my camera and here’s a few shots from the Museums.  As always you can click on the images to go to Flickr see their new layout,  more stuff from the trip, as well as larger versions of the images themselves.
