When I sat in a bookstore with a coffee thinking about my blog and what to do next. I wished I had a way to share my fiction writing. (more…)

Let’s start with defining what pulling focus is:
The process where the camera operator adjusts the lens to compensate for the movement of the main object of the shot to maintain focus on the subject.
Now hang with me because using this metaphor is how I see life at times. A big blockbuster with lots of plots and subplots and a camera following each one pulling focus on that aspect’s center image. Work = writing, Hobbies = Beading, Parent = Aaron, Wife = Mike, Pets = Furry boys and so on. I’m the producer and director of this mega blockbuster. I determine who takes the lead in the story right now and how to cut together all the aspects so it’s the story I want my life to tell. When an area loses focus – well time for me as the director to step in, evaluate what I’m shooting and straighten it out. Life is always in motion and goals are too, if focus isn’t pulled then the subjects own movement and the movement of the objects around it will cause the shot to become unfocused. It takes work and concentration to pull focus on the main subject of the shot so that they are always sharp.
That’s what I think of when I periodically evaluate how I’m doing (I don’t go around asking people like Koch did, I just think about it). Recently I did that in the shower where I do my best thinking. Something about water on the head helps I think. Any way I saw my work life was losing the focus I wanted. For me in my life right now I want to pull focus on my writing. I want to be a writer, a free lance writer. That’s where the focus of work life should hold as I move through life. Some how it got off and was out of focus. I’d over committed myself in other areas so that the shot was too wide, too general and not sharp. I had to make some changes, just tweaks really to pull focus to what I wanted to be the star of that camera’s shot – my writing.
So I realized a few things – one I want to and love blogging regularly. Doing the five times a week was the most creative time for me recently. Blog posts warmed me up for a day of work on the novel I pitched at the writer’s convention. I actually finished it and pitched it and am still waiting to hear from some agents. Then I lost focus… So I’ve done some changes – cut back in some areas so they didn’t intrude into the work shot. I took action to set up a great on-line beta group to give me chapter by chapter feed back as I work on polishing that novel. I’ve got an alpha reader for my first draft novel in process and as you can see I’m coming back here more frequently.
The shot is improving. All the changes go into effect in September and I hope as the focus sharpens I’ll be back here more often and eventually on a regular basis. Also hope that I sell a novel in the next year and get the second out on chapter beta rotation as I work on a third. Yes revealing plot to plan shots – all the while pulling focus on writing in the work life camera. Life is hard and directing your own life is even harder but well worth the effort to make a great life for yourself.
Mr. DeMille my worklife is ready for it’s close-up…. at the end of September

HI! Remember me? I’m that girl that used to blog five days a week. What happened?
I’ll tell you what happened–life happened. Yeah I had to get used to working a part-time J-O-B again. Then add in a jewelry business on the side. Then for fun, I wrote a novel in my copious spare time.
The novel’s working title is House of Lucan. It’s a science fiction fantasy. I finally learned after years of writing that if I talk about a plot I won’t write it. So I shut-up and put-up or rather put the plot down on paper. I have to thank dear Eva Jarkiewicz for being my cheerleader through the process. Her almost daily support was why I got through the first draft!
Last week I went to Madison. I attended the Writer’s Institute at the Madison Concourse Hotel. It was an excellent conference. There I officially pitched to two agents and wound up beside another at lunch. All three are interested in the book and me. So I am continuing work with them to see if one is a match for me.
While there I realized how far I’ve come as a writer. I have published works from large publishers. I have connections in the industry. I’ve learned a lot of techniques that have improved my writing. I have cards with my picture! Yet when it comes to writing I feel I’ve not made any progress. I don’t know what I would think would be progress. I mean if I by some grace of the fates I wound up on the USA Today’s best seller list that inner voice in me would say, “Yeah but it’s not the New York Times.” If I got that I know the inner voice would say something like, “Yeah but that’s just in the US” and so on. I’m beginning to think that little voice in my head is the type my father warned me about. He said there are those who “if they had the Taj Mahal as an outhouse it still wouldn’t be good enough.”
Part of the writer’s block I battled for so long came from this little voice saying ‘no matter what it’ll never be good enough, you’ll never be good enough.’ The badgering (my apologizes to Wisconsin) got to me and I froze. Then along came Eva and her virtual pom-poms. She liked it. She really really liked it. I could do more to please a friend. As I did more and more I looked back and taa-daa I had a first draft of a novel. Sure it needed work but for the first time I had a first draft that I loved. One that maybe it wasn’t good enough but it would do, do for Eva and me if no one else.
Then I worked on it just a little bit and took the jump to Madison to workshop it and pitch it. I had two one on one critique sessions with experienced people in the industry. I was shocked when I left each session. I had pages, WHOLE PAGES!, with not a mark on them. When I asked they said “It’s great as it is.” I was stunned and remembered the bloody page I got back from my very first one on one critique from a pro. I HAD come a long way.
As I moved about in the conference having meals and had down time with others attending I realized how very few had published as I had. That had actually worked with real publishers and editors. How few knew people that worked in the industry and talked with them about the market, trends, and such. How few of them knew the industry guidelines on genre, chapter structures, word count, dialogue, and such.
It wasn’t then I had time to reflect on how far I’d come. Instead I had anxiety over the pitches. Then when I had them like it I walked out feeling like Sally Fields accepting her Oscar. “I can’t deny the fact that right now you like me. YOU LIKE ME!” The funny thing was that night after all the pitches were done, the one on one critiques, the critique group, THAT was when I woke multiple times with anxiety attacks. After it was all over, that was when I experienced the worst of it.
Now with a week’s perspective I can look back. I think what was happening that last night was that ‘never gonna be good enough’ voice experiencing some pretty crippling blows. It was his/her anxiety of not controlling me as much any more that woke me. No, I’m not there yet. Where ever ‘there’ is now because it’s always a moving target. But I have achieved some theres and passed them. It’s just now I’m on my way to the next there and this time is different because I’m enjoying the journey. I’ve learned to say ‘so what, it makes me happy’ occasionally to that badger above my office door. I know that no matter what my stuff is good enough for me, my friend, and once upon a time in Madison for three strangers that are literary agents. Mark that down as another there achieved and on to the next one.

**Blows the dust away and gets out broom**
Why hello there! It’s been awhile since I’ve been here. Lots has happened and not so much has happened. I do have a good excuse as to why I’ve been gone.
First off Miss Mo my female kitty got worse. It was very sad. She died and we did discover that the issue was a fast developing spinal cancer. I still miss her very much. She was a very special girl.

Next Mike graduated another post-grad program in Norfolk. It was another trip there for a few days. I was very proud of him. While there we went to Colonial Williamsburg. I made lots of great picture. Yes I’ll do a very belated post about them.
Then there’s work. A few times we’ve had short staff for medical reasons, people moving, etc. At times I’ve work full time rather than part time to help out. I love what I do so I don’t mind. BUT for me it’s a side thing.
Finally my writer’s block broke. Yes I furiously wrote 41 chapters of a whole new story, 21 chapters on my Urban-fantasy with a rural setting, and about 12 on my steampunk novel. The muses were so demanding I’ve been cramming in writing where ever I could. Now my goal is to go to an event in Madison by their continuing education branch where I can do pitches to publishers and agents. Oh to get an agent! My focus will be on the whole new story and getting it prepped as that muse is the most demanding.

Aaron is doing well in college and in ROTC. He got a full scholarship in bio-chem from them. He loves having his own small apartment. No roommate problems that way. Being one who has to report to PT at 5:45 am with roommates who think 10:45 am classes are early can be difficult.
The holidays were nice. Our big present this year was a new furnace and boiler. Our 30+ year old one finally gave up the ghost. Heat is a must in Wisconsin and a new system isn’t free. So each time the radiators bang with a surge of new heat we wished each other a very Merry Christmas.
Did craft fairs again this fall and winter. They went very well. Now maybe I’ll make time to get an on-line shop up in 2014 along with a book agent and a few novels sold! Eh? why not dream big!
Mike and I took a vacation to Florida in the fall. Again we enjoyed an airboat tour. Also we managed to not go to a single amusement park. Did hit the beach though!

Health wise 2013 was one of improvement. My 2012 surgery seems to have helped many issues. It’s a slow and gradual process getting healed and stabilized but well worth it. Sadly as you get older bouncing back from such things goes slower than I’d like.
Finally for Mike – he’s nearing the end of his Navy career and retire looms on the horizon. I don’t know what we’ll do with ourselves. We’ve spent all our relationship with our lives accommodating the Needs of the Navy first and foremost. Now, there will be no monthly drills, no 2 weeks or more of active duty, no call ups – just waiting until we need to collect retirement. However that might be pushed off another year or two if he can. Captain Mike loves his Navy.

Our remaining pets the two Furry Boys – Red and Blue are facing problems of aging cats. Red has chronic kidney insufficiency. Blue had hyper thyroid. They both take medication regularly. They are healthy and happy but aging like the rest of us.
As for comics… Yes I’m still into them. Saw Thor The Dark World and enjoyed it. However I do agree Tom Hiddleston’s Loki got the best lines. Then again I’ve always enjoyed snark (sarcastic humor). As for reading – I am behind. As in a few short boxes behind not counting those I only get in digital form. So be patient with me, I’ve been writing more than reading. However if there’s an issue you really want to chat about – shout out to me and I’ll be sure to move that title to the top of the catch-up list.
I guess that gets everything caught up about me and mine. Hope you and yours are doing well, had a great holiday season and are looking forward to 2014.

I was just thinking about “what is a good basic education?” I mean beyond mastery of reading, writing, and arithmetic? (We won’t go into how poorly or well that is. Topic for another post.) I do think another very important part especially for those of us who are products of the Western world is a grounding in the classics – not just lit, but art, history, and architecture. I think a good basic education means you can recognize world renowned buildings – like Parliament, Kremlin, Machu Picchu, Great Wall, Sydney Opera house, Parthenon, White House, Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple at Deir el Bahari, the Pantheon, etc. Not only should be able to name them but tell why they are significant be it historical or architecturally or socially.
Which brings me to my morning coffee thoughts. I was surfing Pinterest as I do. (I have to limit it to my morning coffee time and breaks). There I saw a photo pinned under architecture as “the Forgotten Temple of Lysistrata“. Which I thought odd on several levels – the obvious one “Hey that’s the Pantheon’s dome, arches, and oculus” which led to the morning pondering. The more obscure one is Lysistrata is an ancient play about the battle of sexes, so why would there be a temple to a comedy? Now I don’t expect everyone to know that. But know the Pantheon on sight – yep I guess I expected that to be part of a basic historic education.
You see the Pantheon was the first understanding that arches in a series made a dome that would not need support in the center offering a large open interior space. Even my bumpkin small high school education taught me that. It was something that was modified and used later in the Medieval Period to make wall of glass and cross shape of cathedrals in the form of the flying buttress. Again I accredit my tiny country high school for the knowledge.
Next I quizzed Mike who has been to the Pantheon and doesn’t have as strong classical education as I got. “Would you recognize the interior of the Pantheon if you saw it photoshopped into another picture?” His answer “No, but I’d recognize the ugly outside of it.” SIGH my expectations are dashed. I’ll give him that it isn’t pretty on the outside the interior is the impressive and the knowledge gained in the use and modifications of arches. Heck, we aren’t really sure what it was built to do.
As my morning coffee grew cold I considered what I thought was a good basic education – a working understanding of how another language different from your own native tongue is structured, a grounding the the history of your predominate culture and introduction to other major cultures of the world (including art, architecture, mathematics etc), strong general science basics (biology, physics to include astronomy, chemistry), mastery of the basic grammar of your language, understanding of major literary works in that language (having read a few completely and introduced to others and their significance), basic economics (personal accounting, intro to various business systems), music at least two years on one instrument (including discussion of the math and physics of sound and how that is captured in written sheet music), physical education (including explanation of what exercise does what muscles to relate back to biology class), Geography (relating to history and general science as well as current political boundaries).
Okay maybe my expectation is a bit much but wouldn’t it be grand if we all got that as a foundation to start building our dreams…

What am I without my story? I am no one I don’t have a name. How each person got their name, is part of their story. From the one given to me at birth to the one I choose to be called now and all the names for me in between comes the story of who I was and who I am. Without my story I have nothing to call myself. I am nameless.
What am I without my story? Experiences build on themselves. Without the tales of what I’ve done or where I’ve been I can’t tell where to go. Without my story of my first steps I cannot walk. I am adrift.
What am I without my story? Without my tales of school days I cannot read or write. Without my first word I am unable to speak. I am mute and unreachable
What am I without my story? Take away the tale of how I met my husband and married him. I am aimless without my rock in life. I don’t know the love and deep friendship of the one person closest to me. I am alone, unloved.
What am I without my story? Take away tales of my growing up and my supportive loving parents are gone my security in life is ripped from me. I have no foundation
What am I without my story? Take away tales of the furry ones that warmed my heart and I haven’t learned to give, care, understand those who don’t have words. I am compassionless.
Without my story I am pointless. Not just because I am writer but because my personal story makes me who I am. I know when I people watch each person has a story to tell. Each person is a rich wealth of inspiration to fill many blank pages. Take away those stories, and we are merely reams of blank paper waiting for the story to begin.
When the blank page seems terrifying I try to imagine a world without stories. That is more terrifying than starting a story that will later need revision. A world without stories scares me more than the flashing black curser on the white background waiting, just waiting for life to begin.

So it’s not like I’ve got enough to do… I mean work is about to get swamped. I’m flowing on a novel. I’ve got jewelry projects out the wazoo. Genealogy is only adding more people as I type this. Summer is coming and that’s photography time for me… BUT I needed one more thing to keep up with. Yes, apparently I did.
I know the internet can be a big help or a big time waster. I do my best to keep up with Google+, Twitter, Flickr, favorite blogs, and writing here regularly. So I’ve avoided Pintrest like the plague. Not because I thought it was bad or any thing (like the evil Facebook) but just because I didn’t want another thing to keep up with.
Then it happened. I had all these visual references for this story I’m writing. I was wanting a place to keep them so I could access them from any computer/device where I was writing. That’s when a friend who shall not be named or blamed suggested using Pintrest for this. “But I don’t want them to be publicly seen as I’m working.” That was my comeback but quickly they disarmed me “Oh but then you could make a secret board. Then to access it from say your phone, netbook, desktop or any where just sign in.”
So I did. It’s great but then I thought well I should have a public board… I made one to keep all my Wolverine links to images, scans, fan art, previews, etc. So if one hobby has it why not the other – thus the bead board was born. But wait! I like books too! and coffee, and writing, and so on, and so on…. until it became THIS!
Now part of my unwinding to go to bed is pinning stuff… At least hop over there (link in the THIS above) and look around. If you are Pinterest let me know and I’d love to follow you. Now to make sure I don’t waste too much time there…
Except there’s this great Logan over at Comic Art fans… I’ll just pin that… .
Until next time!

I hate excuses. I love reasons. Sometimes reasons are used as excuses. I think that’s what I’ve been doing about blogging. You see there were good reasons for the disruption to my routine with all the trauma of last month. I tend to cope with such things by battening down the hatches, pulling inward and getting through. I did that. I’m through and emotionally I’ve dealt with it all.
However I’ve not returned to my 5 days a week blogging. I intend to but well reasons became excuses and I languished in the new/old habit of not blogging. Except for that nagging desire, that I want to to it. Yet we all know inertia is hard to overcome or establish. Yes just as a moving blogging truck is hard to stop, a blogger at rest is tends to stay at rest. I hope to muster the energy to overcome the rest and build my blogging inertia.
Energy, I have to admit it is something I have always struggled to get, use wisely, and not exhaust totally. Still learning what is my best pace. Seems just when I get a handle on it, circumstances shift. It doesn’t help I have the desire to do the work of 100s and the energy of half of one… LOL!
All this is to say, I’m sorry I’ve not been here regularly as I was. I long to be and am working how to do that while doing all the other things I want to do too. The latest challenge is the month of the June. At my work this is our big year making month. I know most retail industries it’s December but for us it is June. Don’t ask I won’t explain as my job is beyond the scope of this blog. However, it is where I go during Real Life and will be demanding more of time in the next month. My part time job will become full time then go back to part time again. I hope to balance that with getting back in the blogging groove.
Maybe my best bet is to start with small goals – a post a week at least. If I do more GREAT! Exceeded my goal. I just get one GREAT! Reached my goal! That way I don’t think nope can’t write five posts now so what’s the point? I believe in times of struggle or need to move to a goal, set yourself up for success. Sure I pretty much know I can do ONE post a week but you see feeling successful builds energy that I can put toward making inertia of blogging that will help me reach my big goal of 5 posts a week. So until July it’s a goal of just write one and go from there.
So today that’s what I’m doing…
