My listening is as diverse as my reading. I’m not a big music person but I love a good story. So when walking, cleaning, driving, grocery shopping, or whatever you’ll find me listening to either an audiobook or podcast. I subscribe to around 30 podcasts at any given time. There are always new ones I’m trying out for those that podfade. Currently here are three I enjoy now – two are crimal based one isn’t but all are strange in an interesting manner.
The time had come when I was settled in our new home AND didn’t have a cast on my foot. It was fall and the garden needed some prep for the season. We did trimming back or the wild bushes so spring blooms would be dense, cleaned up the dead parts of things, trimmed back the irises (FINALLY) and generally got it back in shape. Here’s a few pictures of the day.

Oh and I still have the scarf but the style of wearing it has changed…
I am of the feeling a house isn’t a home without at least ONE cat. Yet I was at a loss as to what I should call my group of feline furry babies. Then I found out and with that I found out what to call a group of feral felines because we all know the furry babies that purr on our beds are different from the wild ones that mouse the warehouse and run from humans. So what’s what when it comes to cats in groups? Let me tell you. (more…)
It’s been a few months since I watched this riveting documentary. Still I find myself thinking about it and just what did I take away from it. It is about the drug cartels in Mexico. It follows two men, one on each side of the border. Both are trying to protect people from the violence of the cartels.
One day we decided to drive over to Mike’s old stomping grounds. His family moved to Waverly, Tennessee from up north when he was in 5th grade. (Finally came to their senses left the snow). So for him it’s pretty much where he grew up. It’s not far from here and on a Sunday before football season started we drove there by back roads. Then we had lunch at the Waverly Café which is new to town since he left 33+ years ago. These are photos from the day.
Honestly I don’t know where to start on this story or what I think of it. I will do my best to relay what I found and my thoughts. I spent the most time yet researching it hoping I’d find an answer I felt was the right one. I didn’t. As much as I like mysteries I don’t like them when it takes nine gifted live loving people’s lives. That’s what happened to these nine Russian hikers in 1959. They set out doing something they loved and wound up dead not from hazards of the arduous hike but from something unexplainable. Why was Lyuda’s tongue removed while she was still alive? How did two of them wind up with radioactive clothes? What removed both eyes from two? What crushed the chest of three? What flailed the chest of one? Why was their tent cut from the inside? What happened? What compelled these highly experienced hikers to do what they did? Why was the region closed for three years after the event? Why were the documents related to it classified until after the fall of the Soviet Union? If after this you favor a theory or have one let me know. The more I found out the less I felt I knew except as the coroner ruled “an unknown compelling force” caused their deaths.
The year is 1979ish. The wallpaper is hip. The haircuts cool. The men are happy. From left to right there’s Len, Mark, and Mike (my future husband). It’s Thanksgiving and Donna (behind the camera) has worked hard to fill the table with food. That’s why they’re happy.
In this blog Wednesdays are about words. What are words in a blog without the characters that make up an alphabet? Which set me one day to thinking about the different alphabets in the world for various languages. I started doing some research and learned that there seems to be a sweet spot for the number of characters in a written language. Yet given that there is a great variation from 50,000 character alphabet to a 12 character one. What’s the outliers and what’s the sweet spot?
