Welcome to the height of the 80s on the steps of the Phi Kappa Tau house at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. It was at the end of Mike’s and my college years. We met at this fraternity three years before this picture. Once we started dating, we dated exculsively. Hey when you meet the right one, there is no more need to look around.
I am in front center with the Phi Kappa Tau shirt and the denim miniskirt, why? I have no idea. Mike is center of the back row.
I have always heard the supposed quote “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” But as I was researching misquotes for Wednesdays I discovered I’d gotten this wrong for years.

So when the kids were here we gave them the choice one day go to the Shiloh battlefield or to Huntsville Space Center. Well they chose the space center. Aaron had been there when he was in elementary. Sara had never been there. So to Huntsville we went.
It seems we know so much about the Roman Empire. We read many of their works from daily letters to poetry to speeches to architectural design notes. Yet it’s the simple things that stymie us. Take the Roman dodecahedrons found everywhere in all sizes. There is nothing written to explain what they are, why are they so ubiquitous that it seems the average Roman soldier carried a few small ones with him and houses would have containers full of various sizes? This common everyday objects of Roman life remain a mystery to us.
My blog was dormant during father’s day so I thought I’d share one of my favorite pictures of my dad. Here he is at the lunch counter where he worked. I’m pretty sure this is the Rexall (later Revco) Drug in the East Gate Shopping Center in Greeneville, Tennessee. I’m guessing it’s about 1969 to 1972. I remember enjoying meeting him there with Mom for lunch when he worked. It was near the toy aisle and he’d get me a little something. I loved silly putty and a newspaper to pick up the pictures. I was always impressed that everyone there knew him and many called him Doc. These are fond memories and yes I came by loving my coffee honestly. Love ya Dad and very belated Happy Father’s Day.
Well I have to say marriage was the best thing that I ever did. Still amazed I found the half of my soul. BUT I think possibly this groom would agree with this Grouch Marx quote.

Before we went to visit the kids they came down and visited us. One of the things we did with them was drive over to Lynchburg to visit the Jack Daniels Distillery. We took the flight tour so we got samples at the end. The odd thing about it is Moore County where the Distillery is… is a dry county. Yep, except for the distillery property you can’t buy Jack in the county where it is made. Still if you’ve had Jack Daniels any where in the world it came from this one place in a dry county in the town of Lynchburg, Tennessee. (more…)
Today’s Freaky Friday isn’t about Cosmonauts that were edited out of Soviet photos for misbehavior, expelled from program, and medical reasons. Which is interesting in and of itself but is hardly Freaky given the well know editing of the May Day parade reviews in the 1960s and 1970s were how the West got clues as to who was in favor and who was out. What is is about is the idea that there deaths in the Soviet space program that were covered up except for a pair of Italian brothers who happened to record their transmissions with improvised radio equipment they built to listen in on the Soviet space program.
