  • Tuesday Thoughts – Podcasts!

For years I have been into podcasts.  I’ve listened to them on all types of topics – travel, writing, strange happenings, unsolved crimes, and cooking.  Those are just a few that come to mind.  During the camping at the apartment without cable tv and streaming I depended more on books, audiobooks, and podcasts to entertain me.  Here are a few of the ones I’m currently into. Last Friday it was a case of not knowing where a man is. This case is not knowing who a man is. It takes place in Australia in 1948. It is known by several names – Somerton Man, Tamam Shud or Taman Shud case. The only thing we know is a man was found dead on Somerton Beach that no one has been able to identify.

  • Thursday Throwback – HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!

Sylvia Rolen Bright at Pauleys Island Beach
My mom Sylvia Rolen Bright (well Bright now not then) doing her favorite thing floating in the waves.

Lately my poor mom has been going through a hard spot.  She fell and severely broke, shattered really,  her leg just above the knee.  She had surgery on it putting in plates and screws.  She is healing marvelously but not fast enough for her. She is not back in their home town in a transitional care facility excelling at physical therapy. Only she can’t put weight on it yet and can’t go home until she has two feet.  So she is frustrated and spending her birthday in the transitional center.  So cheer her up and send her birthday wishes over on her Facebook.

  • Wednesday Wildcard – A Heartbreaking Farewell to Mr. Blue

    Blue

Mr. Blue was always the care taker of the Kitties.  He was the fearless leader who made sure to divide his time among laps in the room.  He kept his brother’s ruckus nature in line and encouraged Mo to be part of the family.  When I think of the gentleman kitty it shall always be of my Mr. Blue. I enjoy tales about characters. It’s because I grew up among story tellers and characters. My mother Sylvia Bright has quite a following on several Facebook groups where she tells the tales of the place I grew up Greeneville, Tennessee. Thus I enjoy books that center on every day interesting people met in travels or while doing business.  This book is just one of those.  Winton Porter owned a backpacking shop and hostel.  It is the only one that actually straddles the Appalachian Trail.  So if you desire to walk the trail from one end to the other you will walk through that breezeway.

  • Monday Memories – Drinking Through A Straw-aw-aw

Aaron learned to drink thru straw 1994
My photo 1994 Tiger’s Stadium – Mike and Aaron.

Okay this was a memorable day. This day, Aaron learned to drink through a straw. It was a big step forward for us given his ear infections.  As recommended we weaned him off bottles early and to sippy cups. The next big step was mastering straws. This is THE day he mastered it! Being Aaron he added his own flare by going “AHH!” after every drink. LOL!

This story first caught my eye because it happened in Asheville, North Carolina. That’s just over the mountain from where I grew up. That’s home of Biltmore House and Gardens, one of my favorite places. That’s an area I feel I know. Feeling that connection I tucked in to listen to the tale. Then through the years I’d occasionally look to see if any new info ever turned up on that missing guy.

First off the missing guy has a name, it’s Zebb Quinn. He was 18 years old when he disappeared. The story started out somewhat straight forward. Yet as the years went on there were twists that only real life could provide, because if a writer did them you’d say that’s over the top. Let’s take this strange story layer by layer. (more…)

  • Thursday Throwback – Milas Lavator Rolen

Milas Lavator Rolen my maternal great grandfather

Continuing on the sharing of my great-grandfathers here is my mother’s father’s father – Lavator. He didn’t use his first name which at times is given as Milo, Miles, or Milas. His sons, my grandfather and my Unkie both agreed Milas is correct, as one of their brothers was Milas and his son is Milas too. (more…)

  • Wednesday Wildcard – Costa Maya

With all that happened in my life, travel posts got shoved to the very back burner then put in the freezer until later.  One was our wonderful week long cruise to Central America.  So here are photos from our visit to Costa Maya.  A small port made to give cruises access to Mayan ruins in Mexico.  There’s nothing much in the town except the port.  Expect tourist prices and nothing else here but we did have a wonderful tour of some ruins with a guide that was a professor of Mayan art.  So enjoy a quick photo essay of that stop.
